Although its name did not come from the Jan and Dean song, Surf City is the place to visit if you’re gonna have some fun. In fact, the town actually acquired its name in 1894 – long before the tune hit the airwaves. Turn north on Long Beach Boulevard after you depart the causeway into Long Beach Island, and Surf City will be welcoming you and your family like an old friend. One of the oldest buildings on Long Beach Island is the Surf City Hotel. It was originally located on 7th Street, but in 1886 it was moved to its current home at 8th Street and Long Beach Boulevard. It was quite a popular spot early in the 20th century, and its staff and rooms are still accommodating countless weary travelers today. The kids can get down to the nitty-gritty of things when they set foot on the beach well-equipped with pails and shovels. Swim, search for seashells, or just sit back and let the sunshine warm your soul. Life is easy here in Surf City. No pets or alcohol are allowed on the beaches to encourage a family friendly atmosphere. If sitting on the sand doesn’t excite you, there are designated areas for surfing and fishing. Like all of Long Beach Island, a walk from the bay to the beach is brief and you won’t be walking for miles loaded down with paraphernalia to find that perfect spot. So don your sneakers, inhale that sea air, and enjoy the scenery. Surf City is a quiet place, away from some of the more crowded and touristy locales, but you will be so relaxed and refreshed from its peaceful demeanor, that you won’t even miss the hectic pace. |
